Owen Barfield is both the oldest and least known of The Inklings. His influence on Tolkien and Lewis is immense, yet his thought is rarely examined in his own right.
But Barfield may prove to be the most radical, far-reaching and prophetic of The Inklings.
This lecture gives a broad introduction to this thought and singles out aspects of his writing current to cultural crises.

The Revd. Dr. Malcolm Guite is Chaplain of Girton College Cambridge.

Tickets £8 or £5 concessions.

Interesting! Thank you for alerting us to this!

By way of a foretaste (or consolation for those who can’t go to London in November!), Malcolm Guite has a lecture on Barfield which has been loaded on YouTube (as well as lectures on other Inklings):

  2. The Malcolm Guite talks on the Inklings are all excellent introductions.

    • Yes! They are marvelous. Did you know that Malcolm Guite wrote the conclusion for my forthcoming book “The Inklings & King Arthur”?

      • How splendid! My daughter has been offered a place for a post graduate degree at Girton College, Cambridge where he is chaplain. I am trying not to sound too excited at the prospect of her benefitting from his wisdom because it does not do to be too excited in front of your daughter! But I am! I am excited about your book too! The title alone sends tingles down my spine!

        • Oh, wow! That is amazing! I do hope she is able to study with him. What a blessing.
Thanks for your enthusiasm about the book!

        • David Llewellyn Dodds says:

We had a good reading group with Mark Everitt when he was Chaplain of Merton – including my first reading of anything by Rowan Williams (a book which, among other things, discussed science fiction), which in turn fed into our inviting him to speak to the Lewis Society – whereupon, he gave the paper now published in C.S. Lewis and His Circle.
