Mythopoeic Society Nomination!

I received a delightful email this week beginning “I am very pleased to inform you that your publication, The Chapel of the Thorn edition, has been selected as a finalist for the 2017 Mythopoeic Scholarship Award for Inklings Studies.” The Mythopoeic Awards are probably the most prestigious prizes in the fields of Inklings scholarship, and take a look at this amazing list!

2017 Mythopoeic Awards Finalists Announced

What an enormous honor, pleasure, and surprise it is for Chapel of the Thorn to be listed next to these heavy-hitters:

  • Christopher Tolkien, ed. Beowulf: A Translation and Commentary, together with Sellic Spell by J.R.R. Tolkien (Houghton Mifflin, 2014)
  • Philip Zaleski and Carol Zaleski, The Fellowship: The Literary Lives of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Owen Barfield, Charles Williams (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2015)

Anyway, I won’t be able to go to Mythcon this year, but I hope you can, and may the best book win!

    And what a good year for textual editors! (Looking back, editions were only nominated in 1999, 2000, 2006, 2009, 2015, with previously unpublished works only in 1999 and 2000 – Roverandom, winning on the second time round – and 2015: Beowulf, for the first time…: what company, indeed!)

    May I add my own congratulations to those above. My own belief is that the Inklings are prophets who take us to a deeper place than the sterile conflict between Enlightenment Rationalism and Fundamentalism, both of which are expressions of the modernism (the kingdom that Miraz tried to build) that they gloriously critiqued just as Aslan wreaks havoc in Miraz’s construction at the end of Prince Caspian.
    You are not just making a contribution to scholarship as you draw our attention to Charles Williams once again, important though that is, but a contribution to the life of humankind and the glory of God.
